Hands on Activity
Line of Best Fit
This lesson incorporates how to write a linear model to represent a collection of data points, and how to interpret the correlation of a linear regression. Since there is no single line that passes through all data
points, students will try to find the line of best fit. This is called the
best-fitting line. Students will be measuring themselves to determine the correlation of foot length and forearm length as well as the correlations between height and navel height from the ground. Students will find the line of best fit and determine the correlation of their data. I would use this lesson in a higher level middle school classroom. It would be best to teach this while teaching statistics, because it incorportates a lot to do with correlation. I believe this activity would allow students to be interested and stay engaged because it has to do with the student and their peers. Finally, it is important for students to see how this activity connects with real life situations.
